PRE-RETIREMENT VOCATIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATIVE EMPLOYEES IN SOUTHWEST NIGERIA

Abstract

The study investigated the pre-retirement vocational entrepreneurship skills development needs of university administrative employees in southwest Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was used. Three hundred and fifty University administrative staff at the University of Lagos, Nigeria participated in the study. Three research questions were raised. A structured questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale, validated and piloted was used as an instrument for data collection. A reliability coefficient of the instrument yield α = .86. Using Cronbach Alpha tests. Descriptive and inferential statistics including means, standard deviation and t-test statistics used for data analysis. Findings revealed that pre-vocational skills need are estate management; potato/ plantain utilization (processing and packing, chips); catering and hotel management services; metal works, furniture, motor bodies; plumbing and pipe fitting; air-conditioning and refrigeration repairs, block, bakery & confectionary; entrepreneurial skills needed to successfully start an enterprise are in the areas of operational management, personnel and administration, financial management, marketing, and making a business plan. it was recommended that proper and timely evaluation of the training programmes, and corrective measures should be established early enough to increase entrepreneurial training in educational institutions and workplaces
